Frequency of Vitamin D-3 deficiency in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients at a tertiary care hospital, Gambat, Khairpur, Sindh, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To find the occurrence of deficiency of vitamin D-3 in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis
Methodology: This was comparative cross-sectional research study conducted at Pir Abdul Qadir Jeelani Institute of Medical Sciences, Gambat, Khairpur, Sindh from January 2018 to January 2021. Out of 600 participants, 300 were of rheumatoid arthritis and 300 were control group. Vitamin D-3 level in serum was measured and compared in various stages of disease activity.
Results: In rheumatoid arthritis group, 75% patients had vitamin D-3 deficiency as compared to 27% in control group. The mean vitamin D-3 level in serum of rheumatoid arthritis group and control group was 20.95±9.25ng/ml and 33.11±13.75ng/ml, respectively. Inverse linkage was noticed amongst status of vitamin D-3 and rheumatoid arthritis disease activity. In remission, low, moderate, and high disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis, mean serum vitamin D-3 levels were 36.12±8.0, 34.21± 3.85, 23.11± 5.61 and 15.01± 5.76ng/ml, respectively.
Conclusions: Vitamin D-3 deficiency is highly prevalent in rheumatoid arthritis patients. This might cause development and worsening of the disease.
