Assessment of nurses’ knowledge and practices in postoperative care after aortic valve replacement at Madani Heart Center, Sudan

Abstract
Objective: To assess nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding postoperative care after AVR at Madani Heart Center, Algazira State, Sudan.
Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 40 ICU nurses from September 2019 to January 2020. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and an observational checklist. Statistical analysis with SPSS version 16 included descriptive and inferential tests, with significance at p<0.05.
Results: Most nurses were female (80%) and held bachelor’s degrees (70%). Mean knowledge and practice scores were 70±12.3 and 68±10.8, respectively, indicating moderate competence. A significant correlation existed between knowledge and practice (p=0.003), while no associations were found with demographic variables. Major deficits were noted in infection control (35% compliance, p<0.001), ventilator management (37.5%, p<0.001), and neurological assessment (20%, p<0.001).
Conclusion: ICU nurses demonstrated moderate knowledge and practice in postoperative AVR care, excelling in routine tasks but showing gaps in advanced critical-care skills. Strengthening continuous professional education and implementing standardized cardiac nursing protocols are crucial to improving postoperative outcomes in Sudan.
