Development and validation of digital simulation tools for enhancing burn care competency among nurses in resource-limited hospitals: A quantitative study from Sudan

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the context-specific modules in Sudan, examining their impact on nurses’ knowledge, practice, and usability.
Methodology: A quantitative design was applied in Kosti Teaching Hospital and the Military Hospital, Sudan, involving 70 nurses. Interactive digital modules covering core burn care topics were delivered. Competency was measured using pre-/post-tests and a six-month follow-up with validated questionnaires and performance checklists. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and ANOVA.
Results: The participants demonstrated significant competency gains. Mean first-aid knowledge improved from 50.4±15.6 to 80.0±20.6 (p<0.001), with retention at six months. Practice scores rose from 0.54±0.03 to 1.15±0.12 (p<0.001). Participants reported high satisfaction and confidence, though intermittent technology access posed challenges.
Conclusion: Digital simulation provides a feasible, effective, and scalable approach to nurse training in resource-limited contexts, yielding sustained improvements in knowledge and skills.
