Abstract
Objective: To compare post-ureteroscopic (URS) outcomes, including pain, hematuria, fever, acute urinary retention, and the need for re-intervention, in patients undergoing URS lithotripsy with and without the use of double J (DJ) stents.
Methodology: This prospective, comparative observational study was conducted at the Urology Department of PAF Hospital, Islamabad, from September 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025. Patients undergoing URS for ureteric stones were divided into two groups: group A, receiving DJ stents post-URS, and group B underwent URS without stenting. Data on demographics, stone characteristics, and post-URS complications were recorded. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 25, with a p<0.05 considered statistically significant.
Results: A total of 200 patients were included in the study, with comparable baseline characteristics between groups. DJ stenting was associated with significantly higher rates of post-URS pain (67.0%) and hematuria (81.0%) compared to the non-stented group (p<0.001). No statistically significant differences were observed in the incidence of fever between the groups.
Conclusion: Routine use of DJ stents following URS may be associated with increased post-URS morbidity, including pain and hematuria. Selective stenting based on intraoperative findings may reduce complications and improve patient outcomes.

Key words: DJ stenting, hematuria, ureteric stones, ureteroscopy.
