Perception, knowledge and attitude of doctors regarding mango consumption in diabetic population in Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To assess the perception, knowledge, and attitude of doctors regarding mango consumption in diabetic population in Pakistan.
Methodology: The study included 143 doctors from four institutions. A questionnaire was uploaded to Google forms and link was shared with the participants to fill the form. Filled questionnaire were analysed according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines and subjects’ answers were labelled as right or wrong and were cross tabulated with demographic variables. SPSS 23 was used for data analysis.
Result: Out of 153, 143 responses were found complete. Majority (65%) of the participants were women, age <50 years (96.6%) and experience <10 years (76.9%). 26.4% participants had right perception about mango ingestion whereas 28.3% had appropriate knowledge about the dietary indices of mango. Age, gender, institution, and year of experience did not affect perception and knowledge of the doctors (p<0.05). Majority of the participants (93.7%) showed appropriate attitude towards bridging the gaps between the ADA guidelines and their knowledge and perception.
Conclusion: Perception of doctors regarding mango use in diabetics was not in accordance with ADA guidelines. Their knowledge regarding dietary indices of mango was also lacking, however majority of the doctors showed a positive attitude towards learning these guidelines.
