Abstract
Objective: To investigate the association of serum CRP levels in obese and non-obese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with metabolic syndrome.
Methodology: This comparative cross-sectional study included 120 subjects divided into 2 groups (60 obese >30kg/m2 and 60 non-obese <30kg/m2) type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with Metabolic Syndrome. The participants were taken from Medical OPD National Medical Center, Karachi from December 22 to May 23. The 2005 revised NCEP-ATP III criteria were used to determine Metabolic Syndrome. Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG), Triglycerides (TG), Total cholesterol (TC), Low density Lipoprotein (LDL-C), High density Lipoprotein (HDL-C) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) were measured.
Results: We found that 75% of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients had metabolic syndrome. There were significant mean differences for waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure, FBG, and TG between metabolic syndrome and non-metabolic syndrome samples (p<0.05). The Multivariate linear regression analysis showed increase in WC giving 0.13-time positive impact on CRP (p<0.01). The difference in median CRP of obese and non-obese samples of metabolic samples was also statistically significant (p=0.01).
Conclusion: CRP levels were higher in obese than non-obese type 2 diabetic patients with metabolic syndrome.

Key words: Obesity, CRP, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus and Metabolic Syndrome.
