Association of body mass index with physical activity and dietary preferences among senior school students of twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To determine association of BMI and physical activity in senior school students of Twin cities.
Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in which 470 students from different high schools of Islamabad participated. A questionnaire was filled in by all the participants. The data were analyzed by SPSS 21.
Results: Out of 470 students, 234 were males and 236 females. Mean age was 15.45+1.19 years. Mean weight was 54.48+11.83 kg. Mean height was 5.55+3.14 ft. Mean BMI was 20.85+3.95. In this study, 219 participants had normal BMI as they spent 1to 2 hours at school in physical activity, 122 were underweight, 43 were overweight and 16 were obese.
Conclusion: Majority of senior school students showed abnormal BMI values. Students who participated in physical activity at home or in school showed BMI within the acceptable range, while who indulged in indoor activities like video games, reading etc., showed high BMI values.
