Frequency of ischemic mitral regurgitation in patients with Non ST elevation MI

Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency of ischemic mitral regurgitation (MR) among patients with non-ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI).
Methodology: This study was conducted from 25th March to 24th September 2018 and included 199 patients who had the first myocardial infarction. Routine echocardiogram was performed and mitral regurgitation was assessed. Effect modifiers were controlled by stratification. Chi-square test was applied post stratification to calculate the expected value and p≤0.05 was considered as significant.
Results: Out of 199 patients, 144 were male and 55 females with a mean age of 56.95± 9.68 years. Mean duration of chest pain was 4.61±1.16 days. Ischemic mitral regurgitation was observed in 114 (57.3%) patients. No significant association of ischemic mitral regurgitation was found with age, gender, duration of chest pain, status of comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, family history of CAD, and smoking.
Conclusion: The frequency of MR among NSTEMI patients was high in this population. Assessment of the MR severity is necessary to make an appropriate decision for treatment, thus, emphasizing the need of echocardiogram in the management of patients with NSTEMI.
