Association of previous radiation exposure in patients with known malignancy

Abstract
Objective: To determine the association of previous radiation exposure in patients with known malignancy.
Methodology: This retrospective case control study was performed from March 1, 2018 to February 1, 2019, at the PNS Shifa Hospital, Karachi. It included 257 patients with known malignancy. We used a pre-structured questionnaire. Using SPSS 22 relation was tested using the chi square method, the student t test, and ANOVA (if relevant).
Results: Out of 257 patients, there were 51.4% male and 48.6% females. 23.3% patients belonged to age ≤40 years and 76.7% patients were aged >40 years. 7.4% patients were diagnosed as CA right breast followed by CA rectum (6.6%) and CA left breast (5.8%). 56.4% patients were found to have previous exposure history. Mean number of investigations was 4.73±3.75. Significant mean difference was observed for age, while no significant association was found with gender and diagnosis.
Conclusion: The study showed that most of the patients were diagnosed as CA right breast followed by CA rectum. More than 50% patients were found with previous exposure history. Mostly CA cases were detected by CT and X-ray.
