Factors affecting re-hospitalization of patients post cardiac catheterization

Hanan Mohammed Mohammed.

Abstract
Objective: To assess factors affecting re-hospitalization of patients post cardiac catheterization.
Methodology: This descriptive study was conducted from June to September 2022 at Al- Al-Demerdash Hospital, Ain-Shams University, Cairo. It included 60 hospitalized patients who underwent cardiac catheterization. The study assessed medication adherence, follow-up attendance, and knowledge levels through structured interviews and medical record reviews. Data were analyzed for correlations between variables.
Results: The study revealed critical gaps in post-procedural care: only 26.7% of patients adhered to prescribed medications, with 75% discontinuing treatment upon symptom improvement. Follow-up attendance was alarmingly low (26.7%), primarily due to patients’ belief that further care was unnecessary (88.7%). Knowledge deficits were prevalent, with 81.7% demonstrating poor understanding of rehospitalization risks. Key barriers included medication side effects (66.6%), work interference (53.3%), and lack of accessible outpatient services (11.3%).
Conclusion: This study reveals significant shortcomings in the management of post-cardiac catheterization patients, particularly regarding long-term medication compliance and continuity of care. Low adherence and follow-up rates underscore the need for innovative strategies to bridge hospital-to-home care gaps and improve patient engagement. The findings demonstrate a troubling disconnect between prescribed treatment plans and actual patient behaviors, with many individuals failing to maintain appropriate medication regimens or attend scheduled follow-up visits.

Key words: Cardiac catheterization, medication adherence, follow-up care, patient education, rehospitalization.
