Relationship of GSTT1 and GSTM1 polymorphism in anti TB drug-induced hepatotoxicity

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the association of Glutathione S-transferase theta-1 (GSTT1) and Glutathione S- transferase Mu 1 (GSTM1) polymorphism in antituberculosis drug induced hepatotoxicity.
Methodology: This case study was conducted at Department of Microbiology, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. We recruited 243 tuberculosis (TB) patients receiving anti-TB therapy using judgment sampling technique. They were classified as cases and controls. Out of 243 patients, 132 TB patients with ATDILI were used as cases while 111 TB patients were controls. Genetic polymorphism among cases and controls were determined using multiplex polymerase chain reactions.
Results: ATDILI was observed in 132 patients. Genetic analysis showed that the frequencies of GSTM1 and GSTT1 null hypothesis were not different in either cases or controls (p=0.9, p=0.8).
Conclusion: It can be inferred that GSTM1 and GSTT1null genotype may not be associated with hepatotoxicity in TB patient using antituberculosis therapy.
