Comparison of metformin and pioglitazone in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome

Abstract
Objective: To compare the efficacy of metformin and pioglitazone in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Methodology: This Randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Department of Obs & Gynae, Imran Idrees Teaching Hospital, Sialkot Medical College, Sialkot, from 1st June 2024 to 30th November 2024. Seventy patients of PCOS were included in the study. They were randomly allocated to two groups by lottery method. Patients in Group A were started on pioglitazone therapy and Group B on metformin. All the patients were assessed for the efficacy both drugs. Data were analyzed in SPSS version 25, and p≤ 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: The mean age of females in group A was 28.48±4.82 years and in group B was 27.6±5.34 years. Group A achieved efficacy in 21(60%) cases while Group B achieved efficacy in 27(77.1%) (p=0.122).
Conclusion: Both metformin and pioglitazone were effective in the treatment of women with PCOS. Pioglitazone does offer a useful, alternate treatment in women with PCOS who are not able to tolerate metformin.
