Abstract
Objective: To analyse age distribution of patients undergoing cholecystectomy and the histopathological spectrum of disease.
Methodology: This retrospective descriptive study was conducted in pathology department, Watim Medical and Dental Hospital in collaboration with Premium diagnostic laboratory from Jun 2023 to Jun 2024. Histopathological records of consecutive 105, elective or emergency cholecystectomy specimens were analysed. Demographic data, macroscopic appearance, and histopathological findings were recorded. Frequencies of different histopathological entities were tabulated across gender and age of patients.
Results: Out of 105 samples, 61(58%) were females and 44 (41.9%) males. Age varied from 10 to 75 years. Stones were observed on gross examination in 66 (62.8%) specimens, out of which 38 were cholesterol, 21 pigmented and 07 mixed. On gross examination, gall bladder’s wall thickness raged from 3 to 10 mm. Chronic cholecystitis was observed in 31 (62.8%) cases, cholecystitis with cholesterolosis in 26, cholecystitis with hyperplastic cystic lymph node in 16 and follicular cholecystitis in 07(6.66%) cases. Acute cholecystitis in 17 (16.1%), xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis was observed in 4 (3.8%) cases. Gallbladder carcinoma was found in 4 (3.8%) cases out of which 2 were visible to naked eye examination while 2 were found incidentally.
Conclusion: Histopathological evaluation of cholecystectomy specimens revealed diverse morphologic spectrum and predilection of patients towards younger than 40-year age.

Key words: Age, cholecystectomy, cholelithiasis, cholecystitis.
