Frequency of male hypogonadism in patients with diabetic coronary artery disease

Abstract
Objective: To assess the prevalence of male hypogonadism in patients with diabetic coronary artery disease (CAD).
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was carried out from 15–01–2021 to 14–10–2021 at Department of Endocrinology in collaboration with the cardiology department, PIMS Hospital, Islamabad. A non-probability sampling technique was used to select a sample of 189 individuals. Male, age 18 to 60 years, known diabetic and coronary artery disease patients were included in the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.
Results: Mean age of patient was 54.76±5.35 years and mean duration for diabetes mellitus type 2 was 13.3±8.4 years. Low testosterone levels indicated that the frequency of hypogonadism was very high in patients with CAD. Hypogonadism was also assessed with age and found to be statistically nonsignificant.
Conclusion: There is an increased level of hypogonadism (70.8%) in patients with CAD. Efforts should be made to use a holistic approach to treatment for CAD were dealing with hormonal issues should be considered with managing this lifelong non-communicable morbidity.
