Association of menstrual irregularity with obesity

Abstract
Objective: To determine the association of obesity with menstrual cycle.
Methodology: This case-control study was conducted at the obstetrics and gynecology department of Civil Hospital, Karachi from July to December 2020. Female patients seen due to menstrual irregularity having no any other obstetrical or gynecological issue (on the bases of history, examination and baseline investigations) and not taking any treatment, were included in the study. Females with mean age of 23.4±2.3 years (range 15-45) were included in the study. Data were collected by convenient sampling method from 80 women, among them 40 were cases (obese; BMI>30kh/m2) and 40 as control (non obese; BMI<30)).
Results: Regarding the type of menstrual irregularities, 14 (34.8%) obese women had amenorrhea, 16 (40.69%) had dysmenorrhea, 5(11.62%) had irregular cycle, 01(2.5%) had menorrhagia, and 05(11.62 %) had polymenorrhagia. This compared to 04(9.6%) non-obese women who had amenorrhea in 03(7.3%) cases, dysmenorrhea in 09(21.65%), menorrhagia in 02(3.8%) and polymenorrhagia in 01(2.5%) cases.
Conclusion: Being overweight affects the menstrual cycle pattern of women.
