Microbial contamination of facemask used by dental surgeons in private dental clinics of Karachi, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the practice of dentists regarding use of face masks and presence of microbial contamination on these masks.
Methodology: In this cross-sectional study, 100 practicing dentists from Karachi, with five years of experience were included. Self- administered questionnaire was used. Culture growth and examination of bacteria was done on plate count agar (PCA) and for fungi on Sabouraud 4% dextrose agar (SDA). SPSS 25 was used to analyze the data.
Results: Majority of the participants (90%) were aware of the need of facemasks while 62% showed that they do not attempt any case without facemask, gloves and head caps. Only 32% of face masks showed bacterial contamination with no fungal contamination.
Conclusion: Contamination of the facemask in use of a dentists during procedures is not always laden with microbial growth. However, a common practice was observed regarding the use of facemask during dental procedures.
