Exploring the Causes of Domestic Violence against Pregnant Women and its Effects on their Reproductive Health: A Study of Gynecological Situates in Nishtar Hospital Multan, Pakistan

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Objective: To explore the causes of domestic violence against pregnant women and its effects on their reproductive health in gynecological situates of Nishtar hospital Multan, Pakistan.
Methodology: This qualitative research study was conducted in gynecological locales of Nishtar Hospital Multan, Pakistan during March-2019 to June-2019. N=16 physically battered pregnant women were interviewed through sequential sampling technique.
Results: The major reported demographic causes of domestic violence acts against pregnant women were their younger age at time of marriage, rural residence, non-occupational and low socio-economic status and low education level. The other reported causes of domestic violence acts were previously giving birth to daughters, usual quarrels with mother-in-law on matters of contraceptive usage, lack of women subordination towards husband on fertility decisions, financial issues during pregnancy and neglected household chores in antenatal period. In extension, the frequently stated effects of domestic violence against pregnant women were pregnancy complications (N=15), future infertility (N=13) and sexual disorders (N=12). In data analysis, the said subjective responses were coded, recoded to form code clusters and them segregated into deductive/inductive typologies.
Conclusion: In conclusion, various causes of domestic violence against pregnant women affected their reproductive health in the given contextual vicinity. The role of social media, government, health professionals and sociologists can mitigate the phenomenon of DV against pregnant women.
