Effective anatomy education - A review of medical literature.

Ttabinda Hasan, Hussein Ageely, Ibrahim Bani.

Abstract
Background-
The pivotal position of anatomy in understanding the concepts of medicine is undeniable. The enormous advances in information and technology have changed the trends of 21st century medical education. Today, numerous means and resources are available to study gross anatomy. In these times of rapid pedagogical metamorphosis, the impact, significance and feasibility of numerous anatomy teaching-learning aids remains an issue for reflection.

Material and methods-
The authors conducted an extensive review of published medical literature to probe into the pros and cons of different types of anatomy teaching resources; and to elucidate the effective approach in anatomy education.

Discussion-
The numerous modes of anatomy demonstration each have their own unique advantages and disadvantages and none can be strictly labeled as superior or inferior over the others.

Conclusion-
A judicious amalgamation of all these different modalities, instead of strictly adhering to only one type of instructional aid in anatomy, would perhaps optimize and maximize the benefits of both tradition and technology, for the welfare of our future physicians and surgeons, as well as patients.

Key words: anatomy; teaching; learning; images; computers; cadavers.
