First experience of percutaneous nephrolithotomy in Larkana, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To describe the success rate in stone removal or stone free rate with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) at our institution.
Methodology: In this observational cross sectional study, all the patients with kidney stones were subjected to PCNL. The study was carried out in urology department Chandka Medical College Teaching Hospital, SMBBMU, Larkana from January to June 2017. All patients below 5 years of age, patients with kidney failure or previous surgery of cardiac disease were excluded from the study.
Results: There were total of 32 patients with mean age of 33.44+13.23 years (range 18-50). Seven(21.9%) patients belonged to the age group of 18-25, 16(50%) to age of 26-34 and 9(28.1%) were above 35 years. Pyelolithotomy was needed in three patients. Three(9.4%) patients developed urosepsis, whereas one(3.1%) had urinary fistula wound infection.
Conclusion: PCNL is very successful procedure, with optimal stone free rates and this modality when used in combination with ESWL is very useful and yields better results.
