Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency and evaluate predictors of low attendance and its impact on academic performance among private medical college students in Karachi.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Jinnah Medical and Dental College from August 2022 to February 2023. A sample of 300 students was selected through non-probability purposive sampling. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire, and academic performance was assessed using cumulative GPA (cGPA) and attendance records. SPSS version 23 was utilized to analyze the data. Binary Logistic regression was employed to analyze factors associated with low attendance, with p<0.05 considered significant.
Results: Out of 300 students, 62.7% were females. Mean age was 21.53 years, Overall, 60% of students had low attendance (<70%), primarily due to self-study preferences (76.7%), long academic days (68.7%), and inconvenient timings (55.7%). A positive correlation (r = +0.84, p=0.02) was observed between cGPA and attendance, indicating attendance significantly impacts academic success. Factors like residency outside Karachi (AOR = 4.04) and family obligations (AOR = 1.42) were associated with lower attendance.
Conclusion: High absenteeism negatively affects academic performance. Interventions targeting flexible scheduling, improved teaching quality, and support for students facing personal constraints could enhance attendance and academic outcomes.

Key words: Absenteeism, academic performance, medical education, medical students, Pakistan.
