Neuro-ophthalmic interface: Investigating the therapeutic potential of Glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in pathology of diabetic retinopathy

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the therapeutic potential of Glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in managing diabetic retinopathy (DR) by exploring its neuroprotective effects on retinal cells and its ability to mitigate disease progression.
Methodology: This study involved 150 subjects (68 male, 82 female) including 34 healthy controls and 116 patients with DR, enrolled from OPDs and clinical care settings with mean age of 53±6.7 years. Plasma samples were subjected to Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assay for the determination of GDNF levels. HbA1c (%) and Fasting Glucose levels (mmol/L) were used as confounders. Statistical analyses were done via SPSS 26 (T-test, significance value p<0.05).
Results: Mean GDNF level in the DR patients (4.60±2.06 µg/ml) was found significantly lower as compared to healthy controls (12.50±4.64 µg/ml) indicating that lower GDNF levels are associated with DR. HbA1c (%) and Fasting glucose were 10.49±1.12 (%) and 8.03±0.52 (mmol/L), respectively.
Conclusion: Lower GDNF levels were associated with DR, highlighting its pathological role, and confirming GDNF recovery levels as a therapeutic target to DR.
