Success and failure of dental implants among patients suffering from diabetes mellitus: A systematic review

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate dental implant malfunction levels and marginal bone loss (MBL) in patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.
Methodology: This systematic review aimed to evaluate implant malfunction levels and MBL amongst diabetic and non-diabetic patients across 10 selected papers published between 2009 and 2020. The literature search encompassed databases and scholarly platforms using specific keywords related to glucose, diabetes mellitus, osseointegration, dental implants, glycaemic control, and survival rates.
Results: Ten clinical reviews emphasized the consequences of diabetes mellitus on dental implant effectiveness globally. Controlled diabetes levels were recommended for implant success, while certain risk factors associated with diabetes were found to affect osseointegration.
Conclusion: The review underscores the importance of glycemic control in managing oral inflammatory conditions and achieving successful dental implants in patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Controlled diabetes appeared favourable for dental implant success, while insufficient evidence discouraged dental implants in poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. Future studies on significant sample sizes and extended periods are recommended to explore implant endurance in diabetic patients.
