Knowledge, perception and practices of dentists regarding management of medical emergencies in dental setup

Abstract
Objective: To assess the knowledge, perception, and practices of dentists regarding management of medical emergencies in dental setup.
Methodology: This cross-sectional analytical study was carried out in dental colleges and teaching hospitals of Rawalpindi, Pakistan, from 26th September 2022 to 27th April 2023. It included house officers, general dentists, postgraduate trainees and consultants working in academic institutions. Participants were asked to fill a self-administered questionnaire, comprising of 22 questions regarding their knowledge, perception, and practices. Data were analysed by using SPSS 17 and a p<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: There were 385 participants in the study, 65.5% were females and 30.5% males. 80.3% were in the age group of 20-30, 14.5% in ages 30-40 and 1.5% in 40-50 years. Out of 385 participants, 309 were house officers, 55 general dentists, 14 post-graduates and 7 were consultants. Most common medical emergency faced, according to 56.5% responses was ‘syncope’, 32.5% said it was hypoglycaemia, 6% said fits, 4% answered it was local anaesthesia reaction and 1% said its inhalation of a foreign body. 68% said that they have a trained dental staff for assistance in any medical emergency while 32% said that they didn’t have trained staff (p <0.05).
Conclusion: The study shows that the participants were capable enough to manage a medical emergency and the response was much better than other studies compared.
