Custom made endoprosthesis following distal femur tumor resection: 6 years follow-up results

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the functional and oncological outcomes of custom made endoprosthesis following distal femur tumor resection over a period of 6 years.
Methodology: We reviewed 35 bone tumor cases operated upon between April 2003 and February 2009 to study the 6 years follow-up results. There were 20 women and 15 men with a mean age of 24 (range 14-65 years). There were 28 primary malignant distal femur tumors, four aggressive benign distal femur tumors (Giant Cell Tumor /G.C.T), and three metastasis (primary malignancies were renal and lung). Overall 23 patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Twenty-five patients received adjuvant additional chemotherapy. Post-operative follow-up phase of the patients was performed through out-patient clinic, medical files or phone call basis. Patients were examined for complications, oncological and functional outcomes.
Results: Among the 35 patients, there were 15 deaths (42.9%) and 20 survivals (57.1%) at their individual sixth year follow-up. The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) functional rating at their individual sixth year follow up was excellent in 13 patients (65%), good in five (25%), fair in one (5%) and poor in one (5%).
Conclusion: Limb salvage surgeries for distal femur bone tumors through the introduction of custom made endoprosthesis in our service improved the outcome and decreased the mortality and morbidity of the patients.
