Prognosis of Non-small cell lung cancer in relation to the smoking status in a tertiary care Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To assess the association of different subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with smoking status of the patient and compare the prognosis of ever smokers and never-smokers with NSCLC.
Methodology: In this study, 147 NSCLC cases which were already classified into adenocarcinoma (ADC), squamous cell carcinoma (SQC) and adenosquamous carcinoma were assessed in relation with the smoking status along with the overall survival rate of each cancer was noted in relation with the smoking status of the patient.
Results: Among never smokers, 75.4% of patients were associated with ADC, whereas among ever smokers, 79.1% were SQC. The median overall survival of never smoker ADC and adenosquamous carcinoma patients was longer than that of smoker ADC and adenosquamous carcinoma patient. No significant difference was seen in the overall survival of SQC patients with the change in smoking status.
Conclusion: Lung ADC was associated with ever smokers and the patients having lung ADC and adenosquamous carcinoma with no smoking history had better overall survival than the patients having lung ADC with positive smoking history.
