Academic motivation among undergraduate medical students: A comparative study

Abstract
Objective: To compare the academic motivation between male and female medical students of third-year MBBS in private medical colleges of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Methodology: A total of 270 male and female students of third-year MBBS from two private medical colleges in Islamabad and one from Rawalpindi participated in the study. A 28-item questionnaire based on the standard Academic motivation scale was sent to the students via online Google form to their emails. Responses were analyzed through SPSS version 23.
Results: Out of 270 participants, 74 were male and 196 were females. There was a significant difference in items no.7, 17, 26, and 27 displaying a p-value of less than 0.005.
Conclusion: Female students were more intrinsically motivated than male students. Males were more extrinsically motivated and amotivated as compared to female students.
