Abstract
Objective: To determine the knowledge and utilization of iodized salt at the household level and assess whether its use is affected by socio-demographic and health consciousness factors.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study approached the respondent through a non-probability convenience sampling approach. We used interviews from structured questionnaires. The sample size of 301 was calculated by Epi Info (version 7.1). The prevalence of 73% was considered (based on previous studies), keeping the confidence level of 95%, with a margin of error of 5%. The study population was individuals who purchased salt for the household.
Results: The frequency of iodized salt usage was 73.8%. Using chi-square analysis, the significant association with iodized salt usage was observed among the higher age group, gender (female), married, having attained higher education, and being in a higher income group (p<0.05). The logistic regression model explained 25.4% of the variance in iodized salt usage due to knowledge and socio-demographic characteristics.
Conclusion: Ensuring widespread, affordable availability is pivotal in tackling underutilization. Given the current backdrop of substantial inflation and economic adversities, it is vital to sensitize policymakers and consumers about the tradeoffs of investing in iodized salt usage. Despite the extensive use in households, consistent scrutiny and assessment of initiatives are imperative to guarantee success.

Key words: Iodized salt, knowledge, attitudes, practice, household consumption, iodine deficiency.
