Assessing the impact of self-care telemonitoring on readmission rates of patients with heart failure in Indonesia

Abstract
Objective: To identify the impact of self-care telemonitoring on the readmission rate of patients with heart failure in Indonesia.
Methodology: This quasi-experimental study used purposive method and recruited a sample size of 51 respondents in each intervention and control group. Usual care was applied to respondents in the control group, while self-care telemonitoring once a week lasting four weeks was employed to intervention group. Socio-demographic characteristics were also recorded and analyzed.
Results: The readmission rate in the intervention group was 2% (one case), and in the control group it was 4%(2 cases). Implementing smartphone-based self-care telemonitoring was ineffective in decreasing the readmission rate of heart failure patients (p=1.00).
Conclusion: The adoption of telemonitoring to decrease the hospitalization rate of patients with heart failure still requires further research. Some factors may affect the increase or decrease in the readmission rate of heart failure, including patient psychosocial and system-based factors.
