Abstract
Objective: To assess the knowledge and attitudes toward breast cancer among women in the Jazan region in Saudi Arabia.
Methodology: This cross-sectional descriptive community-based study with women aged 20 and over was conducted in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. We used structured interviews in Arabic conducted by authors. The questionnaire consisted of questions related to women's knowledge and attitudes toward breast cancer and demographic information. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: Out of 567 women,68.8% were Saudi. Most had age 20–30 years. Among the 567 respondents, 9.5% had a family history of breast cancer. Media and news sources were the most common source of information (79.5%). Study showed that 57.3% had an unsatisfactory overall knowledge of breast cancer. However, a large proportion of respondents had a positive attitude toward breast cancer.
Conclusion: Women in Jazan had lower knowledge related to breast cancer than expected. They had a relatively positive attitude toward breast cancer. This study highlights the need for comprehensive and well-planned educational programs for women.
