Obesity: a risk factor for infertility among Pakistani male population

Abstract
Objective: To see the association of obesity as a risk factor for infertility in males.
Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted on the patients attending outpatient department (OPD) from two different tertiary care Hospital during the period of June 2010 to May 2011. A total of 147 cases and 153 controls were enrolled. Their semen analysis and serum testosterone estimation was done. Data were analyzed via SPSS 16.0 by using Analysis of Variances (ANOVA) and independent t test to compare the means and to observe sensitivity of tests and to evaluate the significant association between the groups.
Results: A significant indirect correlation existed between testosterone levels and BMI. Raised BMI with the reduction in testosterone levels appear to have an association with male infertility. The sperm count and testosterone levels had a significant relationship (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Increased BMI and decreased levels of testosterone was related to male infertility in local population of Karachi
