Frequency of non-carious cervical lesions in patients requiring prosthodontic treatment at a teaching hospital in KPK, Pakistan: A cross-sectional study

Ambreen Usmani.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) relative to age among population requiring prosthodontic treatment at a teaching hospital in KPK.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study involving 213 participants aged 18 to 60 years was conducted. Participants relevant history was recorded followed by complete intraoral and extraoral examination to identify non-carious lesions. NCCL was stratified among age and gender to see effect modification, by using Chi square test.
Results: Tout of 213 patients, there were 134 males (62.9%) and 79 females (37.1%). The prevalence of NCCL was 71.8% (95% confidence interval). Among 18 to 40-year-old participants, the mean of NCCL was higher in males. Participants aged 41 to 60 years were more likely to present higher mean of NCCL. Out of 153 cases, the highest pattern was erosion 69 (45.1%) followed by abrasion 58 (37.9%) and abfraction 26 (17%).
Conclusion: The prevalence of NCCL was 71.8%, and it increased with advancing age. It is very important to recognize tooth wear in early stage, because treatment in case of pathological tooth wear usually requires extensive restorations.

Key words: Tooth wear, prevalence, abrasion, dental, erosion.
