Patient's motives to visit dental quacks for missing teeth and complications associated with prosthesis

Abstract
Objective: To find the reasons to get prosthesis from quacks and complications associated with such prosthesis in our region.
Methodology: In this cross-sectional study at Rawal Institute of Health science Islamabad, data were recorded using a questionnaire. By convenience sampling, 144 patients were included in the study from March to December 2022. The responses recorded were analyzed using SPSS version 21 with descriptive statistics.
Results: About 64% of patients were facing problems with the dentures and 74.2% had no awareness about the qualification of the practitioner. This was the most common reason to visit the quack. Other motives were low socioeconomic status, proximity to house, option of fixed prosthesis in maximum cases and single visit prosthesis fabrication.
Conclusion: Most of the patients fall prey to unethical practice due to lack of awareness and low socioeconomic status. Measures should be taken to avoid this. Mobilization of general dentists, specialists and dental auxiliaries is vital step in creating awareness among the general population.
