Effect of perioperative intravenous colloids infusion on postoperative nausea and vomiting after laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Taysir Mohamed Nsour.

Abstract
Objectives

The aim of this study was to identify the efficacy of the colloids administration in different volumes in prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Materials and methods

A number of one hundred and two female patients in the age group 18-60 years, ASA grade I and II planned for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anaesthesia, were randomly allocated to receive intravenously 10 ml/kg (group I ), 20 ml kg (group I) of colloid solution (Voloven). Each group comprised of 51 patients. Heart rate, blood pressure, SpO2 and EtCO2 were monitored. Visual analogue scale (VAS) score for nausea and vomiting was noted.

Results

Demographic data (age, weight and average duration of surgery) was comparable amongst the three groups.
In the early postoperative period, VAS score for nausea was more in group I as compared to groups II. Vomiting and the need for anti-emetics administration was more in group I (43%) compared to group II (17.6%). Incidence of minor morbidities like thirst (31% in group I, 18% in group II) and dizziness (8% in group I and 2 % in group II)

Conclusion

Perioperative fluid supplementation using 20 ml kg colloids infusion showed to be a good option for reducing the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting, however, in some cases the use of anti-emetics is mandatory in some sever cases of nausea and vomiting.

Key words: Postoperative nausea and vomiting; laparoscopic surgery; Colloids. Visual analogue scale.
