Navigating the Frontlines: Inside dynamics of nursing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's tertiary care hospitals

Abstract
Objective: To assess the nurses’ perceived work environment in public tertiary care hospitals of KPK.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted from March to July 2019. A sample size of 329 was recruited through random sampling techniques from tertiary care teaching hospitals of KPK. Self-reported scales namely (PWE and NWI) were distributed among participants. Grand mean score <2.5 of each component were taken for the favorable work environment and grand mean >2.5 for taken for unfavorable work conditions.
Results: More than 80% participants were females with mean age of 30.8 years. Grand mean scores were >2.5 of the four components that nurse’s work environment was unfavorable, except collegial nurse-physician relationship grand mean 2.3 indicating that nurses were satisfied from this category. There was a statistically significant association between gender and current work units (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Nurse’s perceived their work environment in public tertiary care hospitals of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as unfavorable for nursing practice. Policymakers need to focus on the work environment as indicated in the study and provide a favorable work environment to nurses for patient safety and nursing care quality.
