Abstract
Objective: To assess the effect of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on exclusive breastfeeding in low birth weight infants (LBW) at discharge.
Methodology: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) included 100 LBW infants. KMC infants (n=50) were subjected to the skin to skin contact (SSC) with their mothers. The control group (n=50) received a Conventional Method of Care (CMC) in the neonatal nursery.
Results: In KMC group early commencement of breastfeeding mean time was 2.64±0.63 vs. conventional method of care (CMC) group 4.02±1.05 days). (p<0.001). The breastfeeding rate at discharge in KMC and CMC groups were 98% & 86%, respectively (p=0.014). In the KMC group, exclusive breastfeeding rate was 38 (76%), while in CMC group 27 (54%) (p=0.021).
Conclusion: KMC group promotes the early commencement of breastfeeding, and augmented the exclusive breastfeeding in LBW infants at discharge as compared to CMC group.

Key words: Kangaroo mother care (KMC), conventional method care (CMC), low birth weight, LBW.
