Frequency of partial edentulism by Kennedy classification in association with age, gender and arches

Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency of partial edentulism by Kennedy classification in patients presenting to a tertiary care hospital.
Methodology: A total of 300 patients presented to dental OPD of Prosthodontics department, Punjab Dental Hospital, Lahore with partial edentulous area in either or both arches of age 20-70 years and both genders were included. Patients with complete edentulous patients and mentally handicapped were excluded. After taking history, each patient was examined to determine the pattern of partial edentulism based on Kennedy’s classification along with modification spaces in both arches.
Results: Age range in this study was from 20 to 70 years with mean age of 53.54±10.80 years. Out of the 300 patients, 139 (46.33%) were male and 161 (53.67%) females with male to female ratio of 1:1.2. In this study, 36 (12.0%) patients had Kennedy class I, 145 (48.33%) class II, 87 (29.0%) class III and 32 (10.67%) patients had class IV partial edentulism.
Conclusion: Kennedy class II was the most common partial eduntulism in our population followed by class III, I and IV.
