Role of Pilates exercises in management of knee osteoarthritis of knee joint

Abstract
Knee joint supports the full body weight and transfers forces during gait. Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative disorder where loss of cartilage results in formation of cyst and bony spurs. Females are more effected compared to males. It is managed for its symptoms including pain, function and range of motion for activities of daily living. Conservative management include exercise (Pilates aerobics, isometrics and strengthening), phonophoresis and therapeutic application of ultrasound. The effect of isometric and Pilates exercise on pain, physical and mental aspects of quality of life in women is an effective exercise program. Pilates training may result in improved strength, functional measures and proprioceptive ability. Pilates exercises may be an effective, enjoyable and safe exercise option for women with osteoarthritis Pilates should be considered in improving motor functions of elderly males with knee osteoarthritis. In bilateral disease, the strength and flexibility training improves speed and endurance.
