Profile and etiology of hypertensive patients at young age in Pakistani population

Abstract
Objective: To determine the clinical and biochemical profile and etiology of hypertension at young age in Pakistani population.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the department of cardiology, Lady Reading Hospital Medical Teaching Institution, Peshawar from June 2017 to December 2019 using purposive convenient sampling. Young patient less than 40 years were evaluated clinically and biochemically for etiology of hypertension.
Results: Out of 480 patients,265 (55%) were female and 216 (45%) males. Mean age was 29.62 +6.55years. Family history was significant for hypertension in 284 (59.2%) patients and obesity in 198 (41.3%) patients. Secondary hypertension was present in 144 (30%) in which pregnancy Induced Hypertension was the commonest cause followed by renal impairment with frequency of 57 (11.9%) and 30 (6.3%), respectively.
Conclusion: Commonest cause of hypertension in the young age was essential hypertension. Pregnancy Induced Hypertension and renal impairment were the leading causes of secondary hypertension.
