Abstract
Objective: To compare the changes in visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) function after Trans-Photorefractive Keratectomy (Trans-PRK) and Femtosecond-Assisted LASIK (FS-LASIK).
Methodology: This comparative cross-sectional study had 40 patients aged 20-35 with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism who visited the Vision X clinic in Lahore from February 2024 to July 2024. Non-probability convenient sampling Technique was used. The patients were divided into two groups; 20 underwent FS-LASIK, and the remaining underwent TRANS-PRK. The Visual Acuity and Contrast Sensitivity were measured before and after surgery using the Log-MAR and Pelli-Robson charts at 1-week and 1-month intervals. To compare two surgical techniques Mann-Whitney U tests were used.
Result: At a 1-month follow-up both groups had comparable VA results, with FS-LASIK having a mean of 0.0460±.06046 while TRANS-PRK had a mean value of 0.0530±.06741 (p=0.485). In terms of CS, it improved in FS-LASIK with a mean of 1.7250±0.21632 compared to TRANS-PRK with a mean of 1.7800±0.16243. CS also enhanced from the 1-week follow-up but did not return to pre-operative values in the TRANS-PRK. Both groups had no statistical difference (p=0.182).
Conclusion: There were no statistically significant differences in VA and CS among the two groups (p<0.05) but CS was improved much better in the FS-LASIK than TRANS-PRK. Both procedures were safe and efficient.

Key words: Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, FS-LASIK, TRANS-PRK.
