Abstract
Objective: To compare the rotary technique with piezosurgery technique for impacted third molar surgery in terms of post-operative trismus.
Methodology: This Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) was conducted at Islamic International Dental Hospital from July 2015 to December 2015 and included 40 patients. Twenty patients were allotted to piezo surgery group and 20 to the rotary group. Same procedure was employed to record preoperative mouth opening in each patient and all were given similar postoperative medications and instructions. Postoperative trismus was evaluated on the 5th day in all patients.
Results: Out of 40 patients, 47.5% were males and 52.5% females. The distribution of gender among rotary group was 45% males and 55% females and in piezo group 50% females and 50% males. The difference between mean pre and postoperative mouth opening in Group A (rotary group) was 5.4+3.0 and that in Group B (piezo group) was 4.8+4.4 which was statistically insignificant.
Conclusion: There was no significant difference in postoperative trismus between the patients undergoing impacted mandibular third molar surgery utilizing either rotary hand piece piezoelectric surgical techniques.

Key words: Impacted mandibular third molar, rotary hand piece, piezoelectric surgery, trismus.
