Effect on fetal hemoglobin and haematocrit level at 6 hours of life in cord clamping at 1 and 2 Minutes

Abstract
Objective: This article seeks to investigate if delayed cord clamping can prevent iron deficiency anemia.
Methodology: This Randomised controlled trial was conducted at department of obstetrics and gynecology, Robina Mubbashar Hospital (MRH) and Mohiuddin Teaching Hospital (MOTH) Mirpur, AJK from February 2016 to August 2017. A total of 218 inducted females were divided into groups A and B. The cord was clamped at 1 minute in group A while in group B clamping was delayed till 2 minutes after delivery. Neonatal hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) were done 6 hours after birth. Data were analysed with SPSS version 16.
Results: Mean age of study group was 25.663.13 years. There were 56% male and 44% females in group A, while 38.5% male and 61.5% female in group B. The neonatal Hb and Hct levels in group A were 15.900.33 and 46.900.55, compared to 17.280.31 and 50.701.41 in group B (p<0.05). A non-significant trend (p>0.05) was seen between group A and B regarding gestational age and parity with neonatal Hct and Hb. The female age, BMI and mode of delivery showed significant difference (p<0.05) with neonatal Hct and Hb.
Conclusion: The delayed cord clamping at 2 minutes had higher neonatal Hct and Hb levels compared to cord clamping at 1 minute but no effect of maternal, gestational age and parity on these neonatal levels. Delayed cord clamping is thus the recommended practice unless other circumstances dictate a different course of action.
