Comparison of isometric and isotonic exercises in osteoarthritis among female patients

Abstract
Objective: To determine the effects of isometric and isotonic exercises in osteoarthritis in female patients.
Methodology: This Randomized control trial included 64 female patients. The study was conducted at Chaudhary Muhammad Akram Teaching and Research Hospital Lahore, Al Mustafa Trust Hospital Lahore, and DHQ Hospital, Okara. Female patients with stages 1 and 2 of osteoarthritis were enrolled. Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were used for assessment. Within-group analysis was conducted through the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and the Mann-Whitney U test was applied for between-group analyses.
Results: Mean age of patients was 47.612.775 years and a mean BMI was 28.341.184. Kellgren Lawrence staging demonstrated a balanced representation with 53.1% at KL Stage 1 and 46.9% at KL Stage 2. After 12 weeks of Intervention, significant improvement was recorded in WOMAC (p=0.00) and VAS Scale (p=0.00).
Conclusion: Osteoarthritis patients who received isometric and isotonic exercises, isometric exercise resulted in more significant pain relief and enhancement of physical function.
