Prevalence of sleep paralysis among hostelite females of university of Lahore, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To find the prevalence of sleep paralysis in hostelite females of University of Lahore.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 106 female hostelites. The data were collected from the University of Lahore Hostels through a self- administered Questionnaire consisting of 10 questions. Non-probability convenient sampling technique was used.
Results: The prevalence of sleep paralysis was 55.66%. There were 25(23.6%) females who had experienced it once or twice in life, 15(14.2%) experienced it every year, 12(11.3%) experienced it every month, 6(5.7%) experienced it every week and one(0.9%) experience it daily. Almost half (49%) experienced it for few minutes per episode. 42% experienced multiple awakening, night terror and insomnia, 42% were suffering from anxiety and 40% participants were suffering from depression. 45% didn’t find it related to spirituality and 22% reported that sleep paralysis is related to depression/stress.
Conclusion: We found mild to moderate prevalence of sleep paralysis among female hostelites of University of Lahore. Evil presence, paralysis, multiple awakenings, lucid dreaming and insomnia were the prominent most symptoms experienced by students.
