Abstract
Objective: To measure anemia and hepatitis B surface antibody profile of newly enrolled undergraduate students at a medical university in Karachi, Pakistan.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted on secondary data of 1403 students. The hemoglobin levels were classified according to WHO cutoff for males and non-pregnant females. Hepatitis B surface antibody profile was classified as non-responders, low responders, and weak responders. Data were analysed using SPSS version 24. The association was calculated using the Chi-square test of significance and p<0.05 was taken as significant.
Result: Out of 1403 participants, 71% were females and 28% males. Mean age was 19+1.388 years. Mean hemoglobin levels were 12.781+1.855 mg/dl. Most males (92%) had no anemia, 6.8% had mild, 0.75% had moderate and 0.25% had severe anemia. Among females, 580 (57.6%) had no anemia, 228 (22.7%) had mild anemia, 182 (18%) had moderate and 16 (1.6%) had severe anemia. Most of the students (n=671, 47.8%) were hepatitis B surface antibody non- responders, 359 (25.6%) were low responders and 373 (26.6%) were good responders. There was significant association of anemia with gender (0.0001) and hepatitis B surface antibody profile. The hepatitis B surface antibody response was significantly associated with gender, age, year of education and course.
Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia among female students was very high (42%) and hepatitis B surface antibody response was not optimal. There was significant association between anemia and hepatitis B surface antibody profile.

Key words: Anemia, hepatitis B surface antibody, undergraduate students, Medical University, Karachi.
