Abstract
Objective
To evaluate the combinational effects of lecturing and small group learning (SGL) with axial role of excellent students on the learning of Medical Immunology course.
Methods
The Medical students who had chosen the Immunology course were divided into several groups each consisting of 5-6 individuals. One of the excellent students was selected as leader in each group. In parallel to routine weekly Immunology lecturing which were presented by specialist instructor, the weekly sessions of students group learning (1:30-2 hours) were performed and the topics were explained. In the end of semester, the student scores (A 1-20 scale) were evaluated and compared with the scores of students who were taught the same course that presented by only lecturing method by same instructor.
Results
Mean scores of students in "lecturing-SGL" method (15.12 ± 2.04) was significantly higher than that observed in only lecturing method (13.91 ± 2.03; P<0.01). Moreover, the rate of students with very good scores (≥17) was significantly higher in "lecturing-SGL" method (22.5%) as compared with only lecturing method (4.9%; P<0.03).
Conclusion
Supplementation of lecturing with SGL and the utilization of excellent students was very helpful for promotion quality of medical education. (Rawal Med J 2011;36:50-52).

Key words: Lecturing, small group learning, medical students.
