Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency of impaired fasting glucose and diabetes among treatment naïve patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) presenting to a tertiary care hospital.
Methodology: This cross sectional survey was carried out at the HIV Clinic, Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan from June 2014 to December 2014. Two hundred and ten patients infected with HIV without prior diagnosis of diabetes were inducted and underwent fasting glucose level and 75g oral glucose tolerance testing. Impaired fasting glucose was labelled if the fasting plasma glucose level was between 100 to 125 mg/dl. Diabetes was labelled if fasting plasma glucose level was >126 mg/dl or if the plasma glucose level two hours after administration of 75g oral glucose was >200 mg/dl.
Results: Out of 210 patients, 136(64.8%) were male while 74(35.2%) were female. Mean age was 26.5±5.68 years. Impaired fasting glucose and diabetes were found in 12.9% and 9%, respectively (p=0.001). There was a significant association of age with the presence of impaired fasting and diabetes. However, there was no significant association between gender and glucose tolerance.
Conclusion: The frequency of both impaired fasting and diabetes was high in treatment naïve patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

Key words: Diabetes, impaired fasting glucose,naïve HIV
