Effects of diabetes associated complications on quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract
Objective: To determine the effects of diabetes associated complications on quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methodology: In this cross sectional survey, data were collected from Nawaz Sharif Social Security Hospital (NSSSH), Lahore, Pakistan with sample of 163 patients. To determine the effects of diabetes associated complications following were considered: impaired vision, myocardial infarction, angina, reduced kidney function (proteinuria), kidney transplant, foot ulcer, amputation, stroke, neuropathy. Quality of life was assessed through EQ-5D five dimensions with 5 levels EQ-5D-5L (mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression) and VAS (visual analog scale) for good or bad health. Data were analyzed on SPSS version 16.0.
Results: Out of 163 participants, 113 had neuropathy and 89(78.8%) had worst health, 17(15.0%) moderate health and 7(6.2%) best health. Fifty patients had no neuropathy but with 20(40.0%) worst health, 11(22.0%) moderate health and 19(38.0%) had best health. There was an association between QoL and neuropathy (p≤0.05).
Conclusion: There was an association of QOL with impaired vision, MI, Angina, foot ulcer, amputation, neuropathy except reduced kidney function, kidney transplant, stroke.
