Outcome of dengue fever admitted at district head quarter hospital Kohat, Pakistan during 2015-16

Abstract
Objective: To find predisposing factors, outcomes, signs, symptoms, deranged investigations and antidengue serology among dengue patients.
Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted on 310 patients admitted in DHQ Teaching Hospital, Kohat, Pakistan from August 2015 to January 2016. Data were collected by using pre designed questionnaires and analyzed by SPSS 20.
Results: Out of total 310 patients 198(63.9%) were males and 200(64.5%) from rural areas. Mean age was 32.67±16.5years. Presenting complaints showed 193(62.6%) had history of fever, nausea/vomiting 168(54.2%), bone breaking ache 166(53.5%), allergic rash 60(19.4), headache 238(76.8%), itching 76(24.5%), orbital/eye pain of 15(5%), and splenomegaly in 118(38.1%). In serology, 90.6% were NS-1 positive, 19% was IgG positive while 38.1% had IgM positive. 61.6% showed thrombocytopenia, 53.5% had deranged LFTs while 55.5% showed leucopenia. 94% patients were discharged while 6% develop complications and were referred. There was relationship between thrombocytopenia and treatment outcome.
Conclusion: Dengue being frequent in males of rural areas exposed much to mosquitoes. Headache, fever, nausea/vomiting, bone breaking ache, itching, allergic rash and orbital pain were identified in descending order. Maximum positive serology with thrombocytopenia, leucopenia and deranged liver function tests were seen among all cases whereas rarely MP (Malaria Parasite) was positive. Most of the patients were discharged while few were referred.
