Laparoscopic cholecystectomy by resident is safe

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) performed by general surgical residents.
Methodology: This retrospective observational study was conducted on 45 patients of cholelithiasis underwent LC at general surgery ward of Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi from June 2017 to December 2017. LC was performed by senior general surgery residents under the direct supervision of surgeon. Surgery time, complications during surgery and length of stay were recorded. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS version 22.
Result: Out of 45 patients, 7 (15.6%) were male and 38 (84.4%) female with mean age of 41.93±10.832 years (range 19-41). Surgery duration was 88.33±10.53 minutes and post-surgery stay was 34.16±7.367 hours. Observed complication during surgery was gall bladder perforation in 6 (13.3%) and stone/bile spillage in 4 (8.9%) patients.
Conclusion: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a safe surgical procedure for patients performed by surgical resident.
