Congenital nasopharyngeal teratoma: a potential cause of neonatal airway obstruction

How Kit Thong, Nur Adillah Lamry, Tengku Mohamed Izam Tengku Kamalden, Usha Devi.

Abstract
Teratomas are rare tumors which originate from all three embryonic germs cell layers. The most common congenital teratoma is saccrococcygeal teratoma. They are generally non-malignant and have well-appreciable clinical and histopathological features. We present a case of nasopharyngeal teratoma, which was successfully resected using an endoscopic transoral approach. This report highlights the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of neonatal nasopharyngeal teratoma, because it may lead to upper airway obstruction in neonates.

Key words: Neonatal teratoma, nasopharyngeal teratoma, congenital teratoma, stridor, upper airway obstruction
